The Ubuntu 8.04 Beta Release is out. I’ve upgraded and like what I am seeing so far. However, it has not been painless. I continue to deal with issues related to proprietary hardware they (Compaq) put in this laptop to make it Vista Blista friendly.
So I’m a kernel version behind. I think I just need to find the right kernel for the AMD. I’ll do a little more reading on this. I’m also missing some of my Compiz settings because my Nvidia card is also a proprietary one (I know they have linux versions - this one isn’t however). But I got it to work with 7.10. I just need to find outwhat I did last time. And depending what kernal I use, I loose my broadcom wireless. That’s been a big issue in the past but they (Ubuntu) have come a long way on that, and expect them too overcome it again. Again I just need to do a little reading or post something to the Ubuntu Forum.
Don’t let any of that scare you from getting a live CD downloaded and trying Ubuntu for yourself. For most people “it just works.” Let me know how it goes for you! And if you have any questions, feel free to ask. I’m not an expert yet, but will help all I can.

Here’s a great fix for those of you missing your Itunes store in Linux.
Amazon MP3 Downloader
Now, if they would just have .ogg files
But great start Amazon - take a bow!
Footnote: Convert mp3’s to better sounding ogg files with oggconvert.
From terminal: sudo apt-get install oggconvert

Just a quick note. I’m really busy at the moment and don’t expect to be able to even check the site, let alone reply to comments. Give me a couple weeks to meet some deadlines and I’ll try to poke my head back in then.

This post is an answer to a comment by JP on the ever popular Ron Paul on Evolution post. His post was so long the reply needs it’s own post. I’ve tried to keep my replies brief, but if that lead to me being less than clear on something, please ask in the comments. And before I begin, let me thank you, JP, for the well thought out comment and the “let us reason together” attitude you bring to the table. It’s refreshing. Okay, here we go:

Poll finds more Americans believe in devil than Darwin
“More Americans believe in a literal hell and the devil than Darwin’s theory of evolution, according to a new Harris poll released on Thursday.”
You would never guess that by the comments I get here.

Weed through the stinging barbs and check out some of the facts from Ann Coulter’s piece on Fred Thompson and Mike Huckabee:
On illegal immigration, Huckabee makes George Bush sound like Tom Tancredo. He has compared illegal aliens to slaves brought here in chains from Africa, saying, “I think frankly the Lord is giving us a second chance to do better than we did before.”
Toward that end, when an Arkansas legislator introduced a bill that would prevent illegal aliens from voting and receiving state benefits, Huckabee denounced the bill, saying it would rile up “those who are racist and bigots.”
He also made the insane point that companies like Toyota would not invest in Arkansas if the state didn’t allow non-citizens to vote because it would “send the message that, essentially, ‘If you don’t look like us, talk like us and speak like us, we don’t want you.’”

HawkeyeGOP.com had these excellent comments:
And I agree, if Rudy Giuliani is the nominee — we will stay home or perhaps even support a third party candidate.
I was talking this over with a friend who told me that I may as well vote for Hillary. In fact both Hannity and Rush have been saying the same thing on their radio shows, they have been saying that not supporting the nominee is the same as a vote for Hillary.
Well, this is what I had to say to my friend. Nominating Giuliani is the same as electing Hillary.
True dat.

One of my favorite blogs, What in Tarnation, sent me to another web poll. Seems all the questions were written by a liberal. But anyway. Here are my results and some of my comments.

Hunter 19 (wonder why he’s down here?)
Huckabee 17 (really wonder why he’s down here — he’s becoming “one to watch” (update: or not))
Brownback 17
Thompson 8
McCain -3 (minus 3!! ha)
Richardson -16
Giuliani -18 (again, Giuliani scores below a Democrat)
Biden -19
