GOP CANDIDATE ROMNEY PROFESSES BELIEF IN THEISTIC EVOLUTION
Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is trying to clarify for the public some points about his religious beliefs. For instance, he says he embraces the theory of evolution but also believes an intelligent designer created the Earth.

One can only wonder if by “Intelligent Designer” Romney (a Mormon) means the God of the scriptures is that designer. Oh wait, they don’t believe the scriptures to begin with, so the point it moot.
Really this is just political verbal gymnastics. Here are some things he could say:
“I’m for Traditional Marriage.. even for homosexuals”
“I’m against abortion.. but for a woman’s right to choose.” (oh look, he’s already said something like that)

I won’t comment on Mormon’s views of scripture - I know nothing about that. But, I do know that Romney is far from the only person who believes that God Created the world and all life, and at the same time, accept the fact that all life evolved via natural processes from a simple common ancestor. Included in that group are Evangelical Christians (most notably Francis Collins), Catholics, and all manner of other religious folk.
I, personally, don’t see this as a case of “verbal gymnastics”. A lot of folks, however, do see it as a case of “mental” gymnastics. I agree with that view, but a) I find little of religion that doesn’t require the mind of a contortionist, and b) it takes less of the gymnastics to be a “theistic evolutionist” than it does to find excuses for not accepting all of the evidence for an old earth and for common ancestry.
What I’m saying is that your litmus test is probably a little bit strict. It probably filters out people who are a lot closer to you in moral philosophy than you think. It’s also a tad anti-intellectual in effect if not in motivation. That can be damaging to your cause - the remainder who are less well-educated or, in some cases, deliberately ignorant - might prove to be less competent to pursue an agenda that you would wish to see pursued.
