Newman: Can you trust a Republican?

October 7, 2005 by Ron Shank 2 Comments

“At least nine of the last twelve Republican appointees to the Supreme Court have been pro- abortion. Five of the seven Justices who voted for Roe v. Wade were Republican appointees. Based on that track record, it is insulting, and frankly, irrational for President Bush to ask the pro-life community to simply trust him that Miers will be the kind of judge that will help end the national disgrace of abortion on demand,” said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. “There is too much at stake. We will not gamble the lives of innocent children on a ‘hope so’ nominee.”

Coulter: This is what ‘advice and consent’ means

October 6, 2005 by Ron Shank Leave a Comment

Once again, Ann Coulter is on the money.

I eagerly await the announcement of President Bush’s real nominee to the Supreme Court. If the president meant Harriet Miers seriously, I have to assume Bush wants to go back to Crawford and let Dick Cheney run the country.

Unfortunately for Bush, he could nominate his Scottish terrier Barney, and some conservatives would rush to defend him, claiming to be in possession of secret information convincing them that the pooch is a true conservative and listing Barney’s many virtues — loyalty, courage, never jumps on the furniture …

But she’s a Christian!

October 5, 2005 by Ron Shank 2 Comments

Let’s not make the same mistake Christians made with Jimmy Carter. He was a born again Christian – so he’ll be good for America.

Bloomberg.com: U.S.
White House Counsel Harriet Miers’s backers are stressing her evangelical Christian faith in urging skeptical conservatives to support her U.S. Supreme Court nomination.

Buchanan: Miers’ Qualifications Are ‘Non-Existent’

October 5, 2005 by Ron Shank Leave a Comment

HUMAN EVENTS ONLINE :: Miers’ Qualifications Are ‘Non-Existent’ by Patrick J. Buchanan
This is not to disparage Harriet Miers. From all accounts, she is a gracious lady who has spent decades in the law and served ably as Bush’s lawyer in Texas and, for a year, as White House counsel.

But her qualifications for the Supreme Court are non-existent. She is not a brilliant jurist, indeed, has never been a judge. She is not a scholar of the law. Researchers are hard-pressed to dig up an opinion. She has not had a brilliant career in politics, the academy, the corporate world or public forum. Were she not a friend of Bush, and female, she would never have even been considered.

What commended her to the White House, in the phrase of the hour, is that she “has no paper trail.” So far as one can see, this is Harriet Miers’ principal qualification for the U.S. Supreme Court.

“Bush capitulated to the diversity-mongers, used a critical Supreme Court seat to reward a crony and revealed that he lacks the desire to engage the Senate in fierce combat to carry out his now-suspect commitment to remake the court in the image of Scalia and Thomas,”
~ Pat Buchanan (reaction to the Harriet Miers nomination)
